Honda Service Checklists (20 to 600 Hours)
Every checklist follows Honda Marine factory service protocols, using genuine Honda Marine parts and fluids. Part quantities and some steps vary by engine model.
20-Hour Break-In Service
The most important service in your engine's life. It flushes out the fine metal particles left from the pistons and gears seating in.
Parts: Honda Marine 10W-30 engine oil · OEM oil filter · Honda Marine Hypoid Gear Oil (quantity per engine spec) · crush washers for the oil drain and lower unit plugs
Checklist:
- Warm up the engine, then drain and replace the oil and filter
- Drain the gearcase oil and check the magnetic plug for excessive metal
- Refill with Honda Marine Hypoid Gear Oil
- Check idle speed and adjust throttle and shift through Intelligent Shift & Throttle (iST)
- Torque the transom bracket bolts and check power trim and tilt fluid
- Inspect fuel lines
- Treat the engine with Corrosion X
100-Hour Service (Annual)
Every 100 hours or once a year, whichever comes first.
Parts: Honda Marine engine oil and OEM filter · Honda Marine Hypoid Gear Oil · Honda marine-grade water-resistant grease
Checklist:
- Change engine oil and filter
- Change gearcase oil and check for metal or milky oil (a sign of water intrusion)
- Pull the propeller, check for fishing line, grease the prop shaft and torque the prop nut
- Grease all fittings (tilt and trim pivots, steering)
- Inspect external anodes and replace any worn past 50%
- Torque the transom bracket bolts and check power trim and tilt fluid
- Inspect fuel lines
- Treat the engine with Corrosion X
200-Hour Service
Everything in the 100-hour service, plus fuel system and electrical checks.
Parts: all 100-hour parts · Honda OEM low-pressure fuel filter
Checklist:
- All 100-hour service steps
- Replace the low-pressure fuel filter under the cowling
- Drain and replace the fuel-water separator and check for water
- Remove and inspect spark plugs for fouling and check gaps
- Inspect battery connections and cables, and test alternator charging output
- Treat the engine with Corrosion X
300-Hour Service
Everything in the 100- and 200-hour services, plus the cooling and ignition systems.
Parts: all 100- and 200-hour parts · Honda OEM water pump kit · NGK iridium spark plugs matched to your engine · thermostat(s) and gaskets
Checklist:
- All 100- and 200-hour fluid changes
- Drop the lower unit
- Replace the water pump impeller, wear plate, insert cup and O-rings
- Install new factory-gapped spark plugs
- Replace the thermostat(s)
- Treat the engine with Corrosion X
600-Hour Major Service
Our most advanced interval: valve adjustment and high-pressure fuel work, done at your dock with Honda-specific diagnostic tools.
Parts: all 100-, 200- and 300-hour parts · high-pressure fuel (VST) filter · Honda timing belt
Checklist:
- All previous fluid, water pump and spark plug steps
- Depressurize the fuel system and replace the high-pressure fuel filter
- Replace the timing / accessory belt
- Measure and adjust valve clearances
- Inspect the internal anodes in the cooling passages
- Run a full electronic diagnosis with a Honda diagnostic tool and reset the service hour counter
- Treat the engine with Corrosion X1. 20-Hour Service Checklist (Initial Break-In) This is the most critical service of the engine’s life cycle, as recommended by Honda Certified Technicians. It flushes out tiny factory metal shavings that occur during the initial piston and gear seating.
Parts List:
Engine Oil: of Honda Marine 10W-30
Oil Filter: OEM Part
Gear Lube: 1.82 US Quarts of Honda Hypoid Gear oil
Crush Washers: 1x Engine drain bolt washer, 2x Lower unit plug washers.
Action Checklist:
Warm up the engine, then drain and replace with Genuine Honda oil and filter.
Drain lower unit gear case oil; check magnetic plug for excessive metal debris.
Refill gear lube with Honda Gear oil.
Inspect idle speed and adjust throttle/shift linkage via iST software.
Torque transom bracket mounting bolts and check hydraulic power trim/tilt fluid level.
Inspect fuel lines.
Treat engine with Corrosion X.
